Yesterday Latvian U20 national team head coach Leonids Beresnevs announced those 22 players, who will set off for Babruisk, Belarus already tomorrow morning, in order to begin the tournament on December 13 and eventually try to return to the Elite Division for next year.

In order to do that, Latvian team will have to beat not only Japanese, Italian, Great Britain and Ukrainian teams, but also its main rivals for the victory in the tournament – Belarussian team, who will host the tournament. Belarussian team this year consists of many already professional players, of whom majority play in the Belarussian league. In combination with the home ice advantage, Belarussians have slightly higher chances of winning the tournament.

Unfortunately, two potential Latvian team participants withdrew from the pre-tournament training camp, as they got injured. Both of them would most likely made the roster – first one of the is HK Riga players Vladislavs Dobrenkijs, but the second one – Rolands Vigners who plays for Reims of the French Division 1 and did magnificently well during the both exhibition tournaments earlier this season.

Yesterday, during the press conference assistant coach Aigars Cipruss also commented that during this season Kristians Pelss (Edmonton Oil Kings) game has improved a lot, and that he has already benefited from crossing the pond last summer.

Tournament schedule:

December 13 Great Britain
December 14 Ukraine
December 16 Japan
December 17 Italy
December 19 Belarus*

*- the game starts at 17:00 GMT and will be broadcasted by LTV7, so there is a slight chance that the game could be streamed somewhere.

Cipulis consecutive game streak ends

After playing 130 consecutive KHL games, Amur Khabarovsk’s Latvian forward Martins Cipulis was not dressed for today’s game against Salavat Yulaev Ufa, ending his impressive streak.

Cipulis was only one of 13 KHL players, which did not miss a single game during the first two league’s seasons. The league is currently led by three Lokomotiv Yaroslavl’s players – Josef Vasicek, Ivan Tkachenko and Gennady Churilov, who have all as of now played 154 consecutive games. Before ending his streak, Latvian forward was ranked in the seventh place.

However, Cipulis still owns the Dinamo Riga consecutive game record – 124 games. He is currently chased down by Mikelis Redlihs, whose active streak is currently set at 114 games.

This is a list of Dinamo Riga’s top consecutive game streaks (streaks in bold are still active):

  • 124 – Martins Cipulis – 2008-2010
  • 114 – Mikelis Redlihs – 2008-2010
  • 83 – Marcel Hossa – 2009-2010

Foreigners arrive in Riga, coaching staff is announced

leave a comment »

On Monday American Chris Holt, who has a two year contract with Dinamo Riga, as well as Juraj Simek and Kenneth Bergqvist, who are in Riga for a try-out, have arrived, although the pre-season camp will begin only on July 23.

It is also finally revealed that there is, after all, no try-out contract signed with Bergqvist, however there is a mutual agreement that he will participate in the first part of the training camp, as well as play in a couple of exhibition games. If he would prove himself, a contract will be signed anyway.

After Slovakian Miroslav Miklosovic, who was an assistant coach alongside Artis Abols for Julius Supler for the past two seasons, has decided to continue his coaching career in Slovakia, there was a free vacancy, which is apparently going to be taken by Viktors Ignatjevs, long-time Latvian national team player, who has retired after playing in HYS The Hague last season. He played only in five World Championships, although he could have played also in both 2006 and 2007, but was injured during the training camp both times.

Also the coaching staff of HK Riga has been announced. The head coach will be Leonids Tambijevs, who coached SK Riga/Profs-18 of Latvian league last season. One of his assistant coaches will be Andrejs Banada, who worked with Tambijevs also last season, but the other assistant coach will be Aigars Cipruss, who worked with Dinamo Riga farm club also last season.
