23-year-old Latvian center forward Janis Purins has joined Finnish Mestis league club Kiekko-Vantaa for a try-out. He spent previous two seasons with Latvian club Metalurgs Liepaja.

If Janis will manage to sign a contract with the club, he will become the third Latvian in the Finnish Mestis next season, as perspective Roberts Jekimovs will spend his second season with Jokipojat and 25-year-old Mihails Koklins has signed a one-year contract with LeKi.

The younger brother of Janis, Gints Purins, is currently also in Finland – he, alongside four other Latvians, already for some time are trying to impress coaches of Finnish Suomi-Sarja league club Hermes.

Two Latvian defencemen Toms Bluks and Edgars Adamovics have signed a contract with Polish club TKH Torun, which will soon begin a three team qualification tournament. One of the teams will qualify for a spot in the Polish league, while the other two will play in the Polish 2nd league.

While Adamovics spent last season with Mont-Blanc of French Ligue Magnus, Bluks played for Sport Club of Hungarian league. Previously for several seasons both players played in ASK Ogre and definitely have a certain chemistry between them.

According to a trustable source, if the team will not manage to qualify for the spot in the Polish league, both players have rights to leave the club.

TKH Torun will play its first qualification game on August 13, when it will face Podhale Nowy Targ.

Dinamo signs Tellqvist

with 2 comments

Dinamo Riga struggle in the search for the starting goaltender has finally ended, as the club has signed a contract with 30-year-old Mikael Tellqvist. It has been confirmed by club’s homepage.

Tellqvist returned to Europe after 2008/09 in which he played 21 NHL games. He signed a contract with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL, but during the season was traded to SM league club Lukko for Finnish goalie Petri Vehanen. Tellqvist has played a total of 113 NHL games.

A few days ago Mikael complained in the media that it is very hard for him to find a club, as there were not many teams left in a need for a goalie. Obviously, Dinamo Riga was not ready to pay, what Tellqvist asked, but luckily both sides managed to come to an agreement.

If we can trust the announcements made by Dinamo coaching staff, Tellqvist is not the last addition to the team before 2010/11 begins. General manager Normunds Sejejs is still searching for another center forward, although it is arguable, how necessary for the team is another center.
